Prime Minister, Dr. Keith Mitchell has led Grenadians in congratulating Gouyave resident, Mr. Killa for his tremendous feat in becoming the first Trinidad non-national to win the International Power Soca competition and TT$1 million top prize last Saturday night at the Queen’s Park Savannah in Port-of-Spain.
Mr. Killa’s massive hit, “Run Wid It” stole the hearts of carnival lovers and earned the nod for the top spot from judges of the competition.
Dr. Mitchell who has already communicated personal congratulations to Mr. Killa said he has done Grenada proud.
“The song was obviously a crowd favourite going into the competition and the outstanding performance by Hollice (Mapp) on the night clearly sealed the deal. I am immensely proud of this talented young man who came from humble beginnings to achieve this notable feat”, he said.
“I hope this win is a fitting tribute to his work ethic and determination and that it serves to encourage or inspire others who have a dream. We look forward to him continuing to represent Grenada on the world stage; he is a true Grenadian ambassador,” he added.
Five other Grenadian artistes participated in Friday’s competition, which featured groovy and power categories.
Hector “Mr. Legz” Thomas was third in the power competition while Jevaughn John, also known as V’ghn, was third in the groovy category.
The Prime Minister commended all the artistes for representing Grenada well.
“I think the 2019 Trinidad and Tobago carnival season is one Grenadians will remember for a long time, with five of our artistes performing in the International Soca Monarch competition and three of them earning top spots. It illustrates the significant growth of the local artform, with our artistes proving that they are among the best in the region. I am very proud of all of them and extremely grateful for what their excellent representation means for promoting Grenada and our culture”, he remarked.
The Government of Grenada is planning a welcome home celebratory event for the artistes. Details of this will be forthcoming.
Meanwhile, the Grenada Tourism Authority (GTA) issued the following statement on the performances of Mr. Killa and the other Grenadian artistes in Trinidad:
“The Grenada Tourism Authority (GTA) extends hearty congratulations to Hollice Mapp ‘Mr. Killa’ on placing first in the International Soca Monarch Power category with his epic performance of ‘Run wid it’.
“He is truly our King of Soca capturing the crown as a Grenadian in Trinidad & Tobago for the first time in history. Mr. Killa who began producing music at a young age has won the National Soca Monarch title on three occasions and placed second in the international competition previously with his hit ‘Rolly Polly’. Since then he has been working hard to push soca music onto the international stage while representing Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique.
“The GTA also wishes to congratulate Jevaughn John ‘V’ghn’ on placing third in the Groovy Monarch category with his song, ‘Trouble in the Morning” and Hector Thomas ‘Mr. Legs’ on placing third in the Power category with ‘Wining Challenge’. In addition, the GTA thanks Dingaan Henry and Nyelon Williams, ‘Lil Natty and Thunda’ and Mandella McDonald ‘Mandella Linkz’ for representing Pure Grenada, the Spice of the Caribbean in the competition.
“All our artists performed admirably using the national colours with recognition for both Grenada and hosts Trinidad & Tobago. The GTA encourages the artistes to continue to promote the tri-island state of Grenada on the world stage”.
