Mount Pure Natural Mineral Water has been awarded bronze/3rd place out of more than 112 water companies around the world, in the ‘Stilled’ category for “Best Bottled Water 2019.
This achievement comes with the company’s first entry in the 29th annual Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting Competition, held last Saturday in the spa town of Berkeley Springs,West Virginia in the United States.
Mount Pure was listed behind Smeraldina Natural Artesian Water, Sardina, Italy, which won gold and Grand Springs Alton, VA, which won the silver.
According to the competition website, 10 media judges tasted the waters sourced from 14 US States, five (5) Canadian provinces and 11 foreign countries, with Grenada and Taiwan entering for the very first time.
Owner and Chief Executive Officer of Mount Pure, Rolanda Mc Queen, a Grenadian Businesswoman, who has lived in London for most of her life, told reporters at a press conference on Monday that she is very pleased to be awarded this accolade after being faced with a number of challenges since purchasing the company in 2017 from the then water company called Clabone Natural Mineral Water, owned and operated by Neville Renne was experiencing financial difficulties.
“It’s just so amazing, I’ve always been proud to be Grenadian,” Mc Queen said, explaining that she took the decision to enter the renowned competition in an effort to prove that mineral water from Grenada can compete against the world’s best.
Additionally, she wanted to prove to Grenadians the benefits of the water, which she claims has many healing properties due to its high alkaline content.
Alkaline water is said to help boost the immune system and help to neutralise the acidity in the body, which is caused by poor diet, stress and environmental toxins.
This type of water is also said to contain various minerals like magnesium and calcium, both of which are important for maintaining healthy bones.
According to Mayo Clinic, regular water is best for most people, as there is no scientific evidence that fully verifies the claims made by supporters of alkaline water.
According to a study published in the Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology, alkaline water with a pH level of 8.8 may help soothe acid reflux because the higher pH level kills pepsin, an enzyme involved in breaking down food proteins and a main cause of acid reflux.
Another study published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition has claimed that there is a significant difference in the whole blood viscosity after consuming high pH water as compared to regular water after a strenuous workout.
A study published in the Shanghai Journal of Preventive Medicine indicated that drinking alkaline water may be beneficial for people who suffer from high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes.
Some reports suggest reports that alkaline-based water can be made by using baking soda and lemon.
Mc Queen believes that she found a natural mineral healing source” on the island and also “wanted to prove to Grenada what we’ve got.
She said: “I knew it and I wanted them to know it. I saw the proof and I wanted to go international so (that) they could realise what we’ve got. I think if we would have gone local people might have shrugged a shoulder…we decided that if we are going to prove to people that our water is good, we are going to enter the competitions…we were up against the giants and I wanted to prove that we can compete at the top”.
Mount Pure Natural Mineral Water is bottled from an artesian aquifer located in Mount Pleasant Estate at Mount St. Catherine.
Mc Queen has pledged to preserve the area for future generations.
“That area up there, we want to preserve that area. We know that this was there for over 100 years, our ancestors preserved it for us so let us preserve it (for) the next generation,” she said as she reflected on her experience drinking treated sewage water in England, which she said prompted her to invest in making pure mineral water available ‘to treat Grenadians afflicted with ailments such as eczema and even cancer.
Plant Manager of Mount Pure Natural Mineral Water, Cuban native Alan Janero stated that acidity is a major concern associated with bottled water, and what makes this water so healthy is its pH level which measures 7.6.
“Our water with pH 7.6 is near to alkalinity and this water is good to neutralise your body and if you neutralise your body, you prevent cancers. The water has several minerals for example calcium, magnesium and sodium,” he said.
Ministry of Trade representative Ernie James who also addressed the press conference, said that the Mount Pure achievement is unprecedented and encouraged other local companies to take part in competitions like this one.
“I think we should be proud of it and we like to encourage not only this company but all other companies – it doesn’t matter the category of products, just try and get out there and try and win and be recognised”, he remarked.
