Two on Rape & Sexual Assault Charges

A recent tough sentence of 39 years handed down by a female high court judge against a father for sexual offences against his three daughters of school age is apparently not having any impact on some men in the country.

Wendell ‘Jug Head’ Ledlow and Michael Christopher (trying to hide his face) were hauled to court together on charges of rape

Police had to be called in twice over the past week to arrest two men for committing rape in separate incidents on the island.

The most gruesome was the rape of a 72-year old disabled woman of Cemetery Hill in St. George by Wendell Ledlow also known as ‘Jug Head’ from the neighbouring Williamson Road village.

THE NEW TODAY understands that the suspect is a regular visitor to the home of the elderly citizen to assist her in her chores as she is forced to use a wheelchair to navigate inside the house.

He was allegedly caught in the act of committing the rape by a 13-year old girl who then called out neighbours for assistance.

The elderly citizen had to be rushed to the St. George’s General Hospital for treatment as she was said to be bleeding profusely from the sexual attack.

Ledlow appeared before Chief Magistrate Her Honour Tamara Gill at the No. 1 Magistrate’s Court in St. George’s on Tuesday to face the indictable charges of Rape and Indecent Assault.

The 50-year-old Painter by profession was remanded to the Richmond Hill Prison until his next court appearance on May 28.

The alleged sex offender was accompanied in court by some of his family members, who indicated that they were in the process of retaining counsel for his defense.

Attorney-at-Law Francis Williams who was present in court offered to assist the accused in making his bail application.

The Police Prosecution strongly objected to bail for the rape suspect based on the seriousness of the offence and had to clear the courtroom in order to avoid exposing the sensitive details of the case.

The other sexual offence act involves a resident of Maulty, St. David who has been remanded to the Richmond Hill prison on 10 sex-related charges.

The suspect, 47-year-old Salesman, Michael Christopher, who is known to be a repeat sex-offender appeared Tuesday before the Chief Magistrate in connection to allegations of sexual misconduct against an 11-year-old girl.

The suspect was unrepresented before Her Honour Tamara Gill on two (2) counts of Sexual Assault and eight (8) counts of Indecent Assault.

THE NEW TODAY understands that the accused, who is originally from River Road in St. George’s, where he operated a body piercing business, committed the crimes against the daughter of his former lover, at three different locations at St. David, St. Andrew and St. George.

According to a well placed source, the alleged incidents occurred while the young girl was staying with the accused, over an undisclosed period.

The police prosecution strongly objected to bail for the accused sex offender, who has a long list of prior convictions for similar offences, including rape.
Christopher was assisted by Attorney-at-Law Francis Paul, who sought to convince the court that he was not a flight risk and was willing to abide by any conditions that the court may wish to attach to his bail.

Without elaborating on the case due to its sensitive nature and having heard arguments put forward by both sides, Chief Magistrate Gill took a decision to deny bail for the repeat sex-offender at this stage.

“On the face of it, it does not look good,” the Chief Magistrate remarked.

Out of the 10 charges against the repeat sex offender, 6 are scheduled to proceed before the Chief Magistrate, while the other 4 are split before the Grenville and St. David’s Magistrate’s Courts.

The accused will reappear before the Chief Magistrate on June 29, as well as in the Grenville Magistrate’s Court on June 1 and St. David’s Magistrate’s Court on June 4.
