Fitness Revolution 5 Underway

With only a few short weeks before Spicemas 2016, masqueraders have begun preparing themselves for the season by joining gyms and various fitness programmes.

2015 Fitness Revolution Exercise Pr...For the third consecutive year, St. Augustine’s Medical Services (SAMS) has partnered with Fit for Life Gym for its signature pre-carnival fitness programme.

The programme, which is in its fifth year, is dubbed the ‘Boot Camp’ edition as it features an intense cardio and strength exercise regime, which is designed so the participants can achieve fitness and weight loss in a short period of time.

SAMS will once again have its ambulance and a small medical team on site at the Morne Rouge Playing Field where the Fitness Programme will be held.

“Intense weight loss programmes such as Fitness Revolution are very beneficial if you want to lose weight quickly. As with any exercise regime, particularly an intense workout programme, there is an element of risk involved and therefore it should be supervised by a physician.

Our ambulance and staff will be on site to administer medical care to participants in the event that they sustain an injury, or suffer from dehydration during the workout” said Dr. Lutz Amechi, Resident Physician at SAMS

Dr. Amechi also noted that while intense weight loss programmes allow you to see results quickly, it is recommended that persons have a regular exercise regimen, adopt healthy eating habits and change to healthier lifestyles, for successful long term weight control.

ParticipantsHe also pointed out the increasing number of women that are joining gyms, participating in work out programmes and generally becoming more health conscious.

“We see a number of women making conscious efforts to lead healthier lifestyles. The same however, cannot be said for the male counterparts in whom we are seeing significant increases of non-communicable diseases, such as hypertension, diabetes and heart conditions. Regular exercise is useful in reducing the risk of developing heart disease and diabetes”, he remarked.

Dr Amechi encouraged persons who are considering beginning an exercise programme, to consult their physician to ensure that their selected exercise is right for them, in order to minimise chances of sustaining injuries.

Fitness Revolution Programme began on June 27th and will run for four weeks until July 28th.
