The Grenadian Community of Carriacou in New York in the United States has been rocked by the tragic news of a murder-suicide involving their fellow nationals at Flatbush, Brooklyn last week Thursday.
Two men are dead, while a woman is nursing gunshot wounds over what is said to be a domestic violence-related shooting at Clarkson Avenue and East 91st Street in Brownsville, Brooklyn – near East Flatbush and Prospect-Lefferts Gardens.
Dead are former Carriacou Calypso Monarch Kenly Joseph who is known as “Rhino,” and Jerry Patterson, the father of the woman’s 11-year old son and five-year old daughter.
Rhino who is from Six Roads, Carriacou, and his 39-year old girlfriend Gina Mc Lawrence from Windward, Carriacou were shot while they were sitting in a car by Derrick who is from Harvey Vale in Carriacou.
One unidentified neighbour told a television newscast she heard at least nine gunshots.
According to Allison Papson, a reporter for News 12 Brooklyn, a ”man shot his ex-girlfriend and her male companion in a car then fatally shot himself.”
A New York city policeman later said, “a man emerged from a car parked on a Brooklyn street, approached another car when it pulled up and shot into it, killing a man and wounding a woman inside before fatally shooting himself”, police said.”
Rhino was struck in the head and the woman shot in the area of the neck.
Mc Lawerence was transported to the nearby Kings County Hospital where she received treatment and was reported to be in stable condition.
“The doctor said if the bullet has passed about an inch on either side she (Gina) would have been killed. She is really lucky to be alive”, said a close family member in New York.
Both men were pronounced deceased at area hospitals.
The 44-year old Rhino is known for his involvement in Carriacou Parang with the band, “Ghetto Boys”.
About two hours before the shootings, Rhino and Gina were seen on surveillance video at a corner grocery store using an ATM Machine to purchase a few items.
While sitting in the car they were approached by Patterson who riddled the windshield with bullets.
According to police in Brooklyn, after the 39-year-old man shot the two victims, he then crossed the street and shot himself in the head.
The two young children who were traveling in their father’s car witnessed the shooting.
Local artistes residing in New York came together on Sunday to put on a musical tribute to Rhino.
