Engineer Gabriel Henry, a former caretaker Candidate for the ruling
New National Party (NNP) in St. David’s is seriously ill in Cuba.
Sources told THE NEW TODAY that Henry is in a coma after meeting in a major vehicular accident over the weekend in the communist Caribbean island.
The political activist reportedly travelled to Havana to attend the graduation of his daughter who was studying in Cuba.
Details of the accident are sketchy but one source said that the vehicle that he was travelling in ran off the road and down into a valley and as a result he sustained serious head injuries.
A source who did not want to be identified said that a number of Cuban doctors operated on Henry who did his engineering studies in Cuba a few years ago.
The NNP had all but selected Henry as its candidate for St. David in the 2013 general election but was forced to pull him out of the race after police arrested him on a charge of domestic violence against his common law wife.
Former civil servant Oliver Joseph was brought in as a late replacement and went on to win the seat and land the post of Minister of Economic Development.
After the elections, Henry was offered a government job with the local Project Co-ordinating Unit office of the Washington-based World Bank.
