King Ajamu is back in local competition and looking to win the coveted calypso monarch competition for a record eighth time.
THE NEW TODAY understands that Ajamu received the second highest number of points at Sunday’s show held at the Grenville Bus Terminus under the name, the Melody/Papitete National Calypso Semi-finals.
A well-placed source told this newspaper that the top honours went to Finley “Scholar” Jeffrey, with Lloyd Panchoo (Mr.X) finishing in third spot, followed by Sour Serpent and The Black Wizard.
Two females managed to make it into the finals from the competition – radio personality Janice Augustine “Janis” and Jermaine “Superstar” Simon.
The other competitors who will line-up in the finals to face defending monarch, policewoman, Ketura George at the Dimanche Gras show at the national stadium on August 10 are Sheldon Douglas, Big J, and Randy Isaac.
One of the calypsonians who many felt should have gotten into the finals – Rootsman Kelly – was selected as the standby.
The result prompted Cultural Ambassador, play writer, Francis Urias Peters to call for an investigation to be conducted into the judging to ascertain how come the artiste from St. Andrew’s was left out from the finals.
During the course of the past week, the Spicemas Corporation released the names of those artistes who were selected by the judges to appear in the finals of two other major carnival shows – the 2014 Groovy and the Soca Monarch finals.
The defending King for the Groovy is Wrenroy Ogiste “Blaka Dan”.
The 12 artistes who impressed the judges to secure a spot on the “big stage” following a semi-finals show held at Carnival City at Tanteen last week Wednesday night are Shortpree, Scholar, Ajamu, Sheldon Douglas, Boogie B, Allan G, Teddy Rhymes, Killa B, Lil Vaughan, Coxilux, Randy Isaac and Baby L.
“Leftist” of the sister isle of Carriacou was selected as the stand-by for the 2014 SMC Groovy Monarch Finals scheduled to take place on August 8.
On the same night, the nation’s major Soca artistes will then take to the stage as they attempt to defeat the defending King, “Boyzie”.
The line-up for the 2014 SMC/LIME Soca Monarch includes seven former soca monarch champions – Luni Sparks & Electrify, Inspector, Scholar, Ajamu, Boogie B, Terror Kid and Randy Isaac.
Other artistes to compete at the popular Friday night show includes four newcomers – Killa B, Squeeze Head, Bramor, Mr. Walkie, Lil Natty & Thunder, Lil Vaughan, Shortpree, Sylum.
The 2010 Soca king Otis is the standby artiste for the show.
The countdown to Spice Mas 2014 begins in earnest on Saturday with the staging of the Children Carnival Frolic at the National Stadium.
