Helen Marie and Associates has launched its band for Spice Mas 2K14 – “Pursuit of Perfection” at Clarke’s Court Cove at Fort Frederick.
Helen Marie and Associates will be displaying six sections of fancy mas costumes – Dedication (Red and White), Positive Attitude (Lime Green and Fuchsia), Rich Values (Burgundy, Sky Blue & Gold), Persistence (Yellow, Orange, Sky Blue), Patience (Teal, Turquoise, Navy Blue and Gold) and Humility (Baby Pink & multicolour).
The band also revealed its theme for Kiddy’s Costumes – “A Change of Seasons” and the sections are Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter.
Head Designer and Productions Manager of the band is Lindon Bullen, the son of the leader of the outfit, Helen Edwards.
According to Bullen, over the years he had actually tried to discourage his mother from getting involved in Mas costume, he now can look at his mother’s creation blossom into a phenomenal competition on the streets of St George’s every Carnival Monday and Tuesday.
He said that he got involved in mas costume production in 2005 and looked on with pride as his mother’s hard work, dedication and determination began to pay off.
Helen Marie & Associates placed first in the Children’s Fancy Mas Band in 2013, third in the Queen of the Band and fourth in the King of the Band competition.
Bullen was high in praise for his mas band team of workers for maintaining very high quality costumes and that all the productions are made locally.
Culture Minister Brenda Hood was on hand for the launch and congratulated the mas band for maintaining its high standard and for having “a good role model” at the forefront in reference to the bandleader.
She reminded the gathering on hand that the establishment of a separate Ministry of Culture by Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell was aimed at giving culture the full priority it deserves and was a clear demonstration of Government’s commitment to the national festival.
Minister Hood dropped hints that carnival 2015 would be launched earlier next year with the target date in mind being December to January 2015.
Chairman of the Spice Mas Corporation, Alister Bain noted that the launch of Helen Marie & Associates two weeks after that of Commoncheroes & Associates shows that fancy mas has turned the corner as no fancy mas band over the years would have showcased their costumes publicly before Carnival Monday.
Bain welcomed the bold move by those involved in fancy mas saying this allows the mas bands to benefit from the large market available while encouraging more mas players.
He congratulated Helen Marie & Associates for always having a kid’s section and was looking forward to seeing the band on the streets of St George in the August festival.
The band is sponsored by Clarke’s Court Distillery, Digicel, Duty Free Caribbean, Glenelg Spring Water, Creative House Do It Best, Deyna’s Tasty Foods, Waggy T Sound and Rental and Hubbards.
Corporate Communications Officer at the Grenada Tourism Authority (GTA), Chrislyn Lashington was on hand for the launch of Helen Marie & Associates.
