One of the country’s best known sport writers, Raymond Roberts has slammed the technical staff of the Ministry of Sports for not being smart in having extra sporting facilities included in the rebuilding of the athletic stadium.
Refurbishment work in the stadium, which was partially destroyed by Hurricane Ivan in 2004, is scheduled to begin by the middle of next month.
The construction work has been awarded to China State Construction company.
Roberts who is the representative for Labour in the Senate told a recent sitting in Parliament that he is disappointed with the technical staff for agreeing to have the stadium rebuilt just as a facility for athletics and football.
“I can’t think how backward that is. If we have Kirani (James) imagination clearly that facility should have a gymnasium to accommodate table tennis, squash, badminton, basketball”, he said.
Roberts stressed that he is not blaming the Minister of Youth and Sports, Emmalin Pierre for how the stadium is being rebuilt since Ministers take advice from the technical staff.
