Chinese Ambassador to Grenada, Madam Ou Bouqian, along with her Commercial Counselor, Dai Di, last Thursday visited the China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) project site at Bonair St. Mark to experience firsthand the work that is taking place there.
The female envoy was taken on a tour of the site by Zhang Zhitao, the Construction Manager, along with other site Engineers.
Zhitao explained the entire process to the Ambassador and her team from the use of Geo textile, which is mainly a barrier and filtration material, used to prevent the water’s flow from causing erosion, to the excavation process and the assembling and laying of the gabion baskets.
When asked about the heavy rains, as the “dry season” comes to a close and the effects it was having on the project, Zhitao said that the project has run into some unexpected costs, in that additional pumps had to be purchased to pump water out of the area.
He stated however, that there should be no delays on the project, which is expected to wrap up around June 2014.
While on the site Ambassador Ou, chatted with the workers and emphasized the importance of safety on the project site.
She expressed “great satisfaction” with the way that China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) was managing the project and also with the number of Grenadians, including women, who have already found employment with the company.
During her interaction with the construction team, Ambassador Ou Bouqian reiterated her commitment to strengthening the economic and social ties between Grenada and the Peoples Republic of China.
