There are reports that some Police Officers, perceived to be supporters of the former government, are not happy with the treatment being meted out to them including transfers to other departments within the force.
A high level source within the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF) confided to THE NEW TODAY Newspaper that within recent weeks a number of Police Officers who have been branded as sympathizers of Congress have been reassigned to new postings.
He made specific reference to Commissioner of Police, Willan Thompson who had an early run-in with Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, Dr. Keith Mitchell, as well as former Head of the sensitive Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), Inspector Senneth Joseph, and Officer-in-Charge of the Immigration Department, Superintendent Godfrey Fleming.
The source who spoke on condition of not being identified said he is aware of the existence of three lists of names of Police Officers who have been targeted for transfer.
The list shown to this newspaper includes the names of two officers from the Immigration Department at the Botanical Gardens, and one each from the Police Prosecution Department, the Rapid Response Unit (RRU), and the Community Relations Department.
The Principal Security Officer for former Prime Minister Tillman Thomas, Sergeant Allan Mitchell has already been transferred to the Port Police Station on the Carenage, St. George’s.
In addition, a number of Police Officers who were attached to Special Branch that was headed by Superintendent Vannie Curwen have also been transferred.
Corporal Albert Leggard is heading for the Traffic Department, Sergeant Elyan Purcell will take up duties with the Eastern Division, while Junior and Liam Mitchell who were also serving as Security Officers for Thomas have been reassigned to RRU.
Speculation is rife that a high percentage of police officers voted in favour of Dr. Mitchell and NNP for the February 19 general elections.
The source said some of the affected Police Officers view their recent transfers as being “political” and could affect the morale of some officers within the force.
He pointed out that the so-called NNP Operatives with RGPF are now making it those police officers who are perceived to be supporters of Congress.
According to the source, the NNP Operatives are issuing certain threats, which are demoralising to a number of other Police Officers.
The entire body of RGPF are due to meet Prime Minister Mitchell in his capacity as Minister of National Security at the Special Services Unit (SSU) today (Friday March 22).
