The Four letter word

The Stonewalling psyche is always in pursuit of new knowledge, but the university scene has its elitist clique who emerges from behind those sacred walls with oodles of learning and unmatched brilliant ideas beyond the reach of the grassroots like Kit.

Attention is therefore turned to a more accessible, affordable and pragmatic learning centre: Grenada Grog and Rum-shop University (GGRU), to which many including the feeble and not so feeble of mind gravitate. Although it pales in contrast to the age of scholarly debates at The People’s University of Woodford Square founded by the late scholar, author, historian, educator, political activist, consummate statesman and Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Dr. Eric Williams, GGRU serves as a critical frustration release valve.

Open registration is uncomplicated and informal, an eight’s (of rum) gets you in. Orientation straightforward; no need for elaborate indoctrination; familiarity with the standard GGRU vocabulary – a well-known FOUR letter word with the occasional ED or ING for emphasis will do. And off to an intriguing and perhaps unique learning experience.

Learn very quickly – in a cordial “drinks on me, my round” environment – how modulation of voice and speech and expressive body language craft emotions: excitement, joy, pain; anger, disappointment; success, failure; all things beautiful, ugly, good, or bad – covering the entire spectrum.

At GGRU, freedom of expression has no limit, but the class will descend upon dissenting opinions like packs of fuming hungry wolves – a few more shots of Clark’s Court, Rivers or Jack Iron and matters resolved – learn conflict resolution in action at GGRU.

Stonewalling too has a favorite four letter word and finds no moral dilemma in its impact.  Charged with jolting shock value, it shakes one up, takes back leave of the senses and commands respect. As an element of surprise, puts one back on stride, disarms and calms down; at the tip of the tongue and not overused, when summoned, the listener experiences an instantaneous adrenalin rush.

Men of the cloth know that rush and divinely invoke the “proverbial four” – ministering to today’s rebellious and troubled youth – with encouraging passages from the scripture:
1 Corinthians 13:4-8

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.

5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.

6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.

7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.

We live in a country in which frees speech is valued; careless choice of words (sometimes not that clear even to ourselves) determine who we are as a people and a nation – cantankerous or loving – we live with the consequences.
