Camerhogne Park in jeopardy

Uncertainty looms over the future of Camerhogne Park at Grand Anse, St. George’s.

Camerghone ParkPrime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell made this clear while responding to a question from a member of the audience at the Constituency Forum held at the Calliste Government School in St. George’s.

The Prime Minister hinted that Camerhogne Park would be reconfigured to accommodate the highly anticipated Riviera Hotel project to be built by Egyptian billionaire, Naguib Sawiris.

He promised that nothing will be done to Camerhogne Park “unless there is a serious alternative right close to it that can provide comfort and development for the people in the area.”

Dr. Mitchell announced that the Egyptian billionaire who is the investor behind the Silver Sands project in tends to spend over US$200M on the Riviera project which is due to start next year.

One year ago vendors at Camerhogne Park were issued letters to vacate the area.

This helped to fuel reports that the Mitchell Administration had taken a decision to sell the Park to an investor with Grenadian connection from the Lebanese Community to facilitate the five-star Riviera Hotel.

In its campaign manifesto win the 2013 general election, Mitchell’s New National Party (NNP) gave assurances that it had lined up investors to build three five-star hotels along the Grand Anse beach.

Camerhogne Park which is located in the vicinity of the world famous Grand Anse Beach is used as a recreational facility for both locals and visitors.
