Petition to halt the Loraine’s Equipment destructive activities in our community and environment
From Residents, Property Owners, Workers, Visitors of Vendome Estate Community.
OUR HUMAN AND CIVIL RIGHTS ARE BEING TRAMPLED UPON. WE HAVE A RIGHT TO HEALTH AND WELL-BEING, PEACE AND REST, RESPECT AND HUMAN DIGNITY! We say NO TO LORAINE’S EQUIPMENT AND THEIR RUTHLESS OPERATIONS WITHIN OUR COMMUNITY.
We, the community members and well-wishers of the Vendome Estate community hereby express sore displeasure in the actions, attitudes and activities of the owners and operators of Loraine’s Equipment at the Vendome Estate community area. We see it as destructive, ruthless, callous, disrespectful, and a blatant disregard for the rights, health and well-being of the established Vendome Estate community members and of the Vendome community, in general.
Loraine’s Equipment recently, about a year ago, acquired an area of land within the community and has since begun the use of heavy equipment to exploit the land’s resources without any regards to the lives and livelihood of the long established owners and dwellers of the community. At first we tolerated the activities, believing it was a simple land clearing effort in preparation for building of a residence. Now, we suddenly realise it is a stone mining and quarrying operation and has increased its intensity. The effects are overbearing. Efforts to have the related government ministries stop or control it seem to have failed.
Loraine’s Equipment’s activities has been contributing to the disturbance and aggravation of dwellers and visitors of our immediate community and the surrounding communities in the form of Noise Pollution, destruction of our road structure, blockage of our waterways, ruthless damaging of our pipelines, destruction of our wildlife habitation; especially of the armadillo (tatoo) as well as the manicou and monkey as well as general degradation of our environment.
Added to this, the perceived chief owner/operator of the operation has been acting …. against concerned community members who have approached him about their hurt and concerns regarding his operations. On one occasion he falsely accused one resident of ‘pulling a cutlass behind’ him, which resulted in police accosting the resident on the matter. Another one approached him on the effect that damages caused to his farming operations and livelihood of his household and family. What manner of character is this?
The ‘boss’ of Loraine’s equipment appears to be a heartless, cruel, and gluttonous individual. He doesn’t care that he is destroying the lives of ordinary, innocent community members with his operations. We are defenceless and being traumatized by his 24 x 7 heavy equipment and trucking activities. From Sunday to Sunday for almost 24 hours we have to bear the effects of the heavy hammering and thunder-like noises created by the moving and breaking of large boulders and stones by tractors, excavators, bulldozers, backhoes or bobcats or similar equipment. The large trucks carrying the stones away add to the trauma with their very loud engine noises and the vibrations that result from their compression under the extremely heavy stone-loads.
It’s bad enough to have strangers come to one’s community, unannounced, to do such an operation for an 8 hour day, but Loraine’s Equipment operate all day and all night long for 7 days each week. Allegedly, this is a foreign based operation and not Grenadian. Local operators are merely satisfying the demands of a multimillionaire individual or group from overseas. They have a timeline to meet and trample upon our locals’ human rights and dignity to do so.
Presently, as I write at 2:30 am, Monday, October 21, 2014, the operation is in full swing from since about 7 am yesterday, Sunday. I cannot have peaceful rest. This loud trucking and bulldozing activity may go up to about 4:30 a.m. and start again about 7 in the morning. We can find no peace and quiet for us or our children to study, meditate or rest in this environment. We are intimidated by the movement of these extra-large trucks even without the load and are scared to walk when they drive on our road. We are a residential and farming community, not an industrial site! We call on the relevant authority to stop this activity forthwith until proper structures are put in place.
OUR HUMAN AND CIVIL RIGHTS ARE BEING TRAMPLED UPON. WE HAVE A RIGHT TO HEALTH AND WELL-BEING, PEACE AND REST, RESPECT AND HUMAN DIGNITY! We say NO TO LORAINE’S EQUIPMENT AND THEIR OPERATIONS WITHIN OUR COMMUNITY.
