The newest Roman Catholic Secondary school on the island and a primary school in the parish of St. Andrews are the big winners in the inaugural Catholic School Poetry competition.
The winners were announced during the Fest day celebration of the Immaculate Conception on Sunday at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Church Street, St. George’s.
Jizel Lorray of J.W. Fletcher Memorial R.C School at Tanteen, St. George’s was declared winner in the Secondary schools category of the poetry competition while Josh Bartholomew of the St. Martin de Porres R.C School at Crochu, St. Andrew’s was the top primary school winner.
The second spot in the primary schools category was taken by Omega Jeremiah of St. Theresa’s R.C School while Brianna Lewis of St. Dominic’s R.C School took the third spot.
In the Secondary school category, Joliver Regis from St. David’s Catholic Secondary School placed second and the third spot was occupied by Aria Clarke of St. Joseph’s Convent, St. George’s.
Recognition was also given to two schools which produced extraordinary work.
In recognition of original artwork, a certificate was given to the St. Theresa’s R.C School and Delon Telesford of St. Joseph’s R.C School in Pomme Rose, St. David’s was recognised for Caribbean/Grenadian content.
Participants were asked to write a poem on the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Principals of the school were instructed to select the best entries for submission by November 17 to a three-member panel of judges headed by former Resident Tutor of the T.A Marryshow Outreach Center on H.A Blaize Street, St. George’s, Beverly Steele. and the judges meet on November 27th.
The criteria used for judging the competition were theme relevance, imagination, language, emotional and mental engagement.
All the schools that submitted entries were presented with Certificates of participation – Our Lady Help Of Christian Catholic School at Beaulieu, St. George’s, Blessed Sacrament R.C School, Grand Anse, St. George’s, Chantimelle R.C School at Sauteurs, St. Patrick’s, St. David’s R.C School, St. Joseph’s R.C School at Morne Jaloux, St. George’s, St. Joseph’s R.C School, at Pomme Rose, St. David’s, St. Peters R.C School at Gouyave, St. John’s, Uganda Martyrs at Happy Hill, St. George’s and St. Mary’s R.C School at La Fillette, St. Andrew’s.
