UCLA Bruins will not play in Tuesday’s Holiday Bowl at Petco Park due to COVID-19 protocols, the team announced on Twitter just hours before their match against the state of North Carolina.
The team did not provide any other details on what compelled the team to withdraw from the Cup, but Martin Jormond, UCLA’s athletic director, said in a statement, “The health and safety of our students will always be our North Star.
“We are very grateful for the support of the Holiday Bowl, students, fans and sponsors and the people of San Diego this week,” the statement said. “We are deeply disappointed for our young people in the football program who worked so hard for this opportunity. My heart goes out to them.”
The state of North Carolina soon tweeted that Wolfgage was “heartbroken to not be able to compete one more time this season.”
They said they were informed that their opponents had left the match in the afternoon.
With the departure of the team, fans who had tickets to Tuesday’s match will be refunded. Details of the process will be released soon, according to a statement from Petco Park.
“While we’re disappointed that the game will not be played tonight, we look forward to future holiday bowls at Betco Park in America’s Best City,” their statement said.
At San Diego’s Baseball Stadium, which first opened in Downtown in 2004, no. 18 Wolfback (9-3) and Bruins (8-4) are set to compete in football for the first time.
Thousands attended the annual balloon and parade-band parade in Embarkatoro.
Holiday Bowl, which has signed a five-year deal with the Badgers after its house was demolished for a new stadium 42 years ago, has not yet responded to the announcement. There are no authorities for Petco Park.
Both teams said they would adhere to strict code of conduct prior to the match.
Prior to the game, NC state coach Dave Doran said his players were working to “protect the mission.”
“Prevention is the best medicine right now,” Doran said. “Our comrades have experienced this. They understand how to follow ethics to protect work. We are here to win our 10th game. It happened once in school history. There is a lot of danger.
“Some of the decisions we make to try to stay healthy are very important decisions,” the coach added. “They were unselfish decisions and our comrades accepted to get another chance to overcome the contradictions. What happens when you watch college football. There are a lot of unfulfilled people. So these two teams have done it.
NC State attempted to finish with double-digit wins for the second time in school history. In 2002, the junior quarterback was 11-3 behind Philip Rivers.
