NDC statement on the passing of Fidel Castro

The Leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Senator the Honourable V. Nazim Burke, the membership of the National Democratic Congress and indeed the entire nation of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique, stand with the Cuban people as they mourn the passing of the indomitable and iconic leader, Comandante Fidel Castro Ruz.

Fidel Castro was larger than life and proved, through his accomplishments and that of Cuba, that physical size is less important than courage, commitment and cause. His dedication to the education and health of his people and the peoples of the world saw Grenada being a beneficiary through scholarships as well as Cuban professionals working side by side in our schools and hospitals. His belief in internationalism resulted not only in the Maurice Bishop International Airport but many others in the Caribbean, Latin America and Africa as well.

El Comandante was a sincere and reliable friend of Grenada, as was demonstrated most profoundly during the period of the Revolution when he made tremendous personal contribution to our social and economic development and became a close strategic partner in all areas.

His efforts in the fight for the liberation and development of Africa, far outweighs the negative sentiments expressed, especially by leaders of countries, who by their silence and passivity contributed in no small part to apartheid and the oppression of peoples of the world especially in the Caribbean, Latin America and Africa.

Humanity should never forget the debt of gratitude owed to the former Cuban Leader for his defense of the oppressed and dispossessed, especially whilst assisting in the liberation struggle in Angola, Namibia and South Africa. Indeed, South Africa’s favoured son, the late freedom Fighter Nelson Mandela, called him his “personal Hero” for his role in bringing about the end of apartheid in that nation.

President Fidel Castro’s contribution to the liberation and development of others must be appreciated in the context that for almost fifty years, Cuba has had to endure an oppressive economic embargo which only strengthened his resolve to stand firmly for his beliefs and lead Cuba to become a model of self-reliance.

We offer our deepest condolences to the people of Cuba, his brother and President Raul, his family, friends and supporters as we join in mourning the loss of this remarkable leader.

Grenada will always cherish his memory in their hearts. May the soul of El Commandante Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz, Leader, Revolutionary and Friend, rest in Peace.
