Disgraced Corporal of Police, Lennard Benjamin has been found guilty of two counts of incest, and one count of indecent assault.
A nine-member jury which comprised five female and four male sitting at High Court Number Five on the Carenage, St. George’s, last week Wednesday took two hours to return the guilty plea on Benjamin who last worked at the Community Relations Department of the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF).
One of the verdicts from the jury was a majority, while the other two were unanimous.
Benjamin is convicted of committing both incest and indecent assault with his daughter.
High Court Judge, Justice Shiraz Aziz has set December 7th as the date for sentencing.
Well-placed sources told THE NEW TODAY newspaper that the evidence against the policeman was “very strong” especially a report given by the victim.
A source who asked not to be identified said the evidence points to some form of “devil worship” that was used on the youngster to lure her into sexual acts.
He said that during the trial, Benjamin hardly looked in the direction of the jurors.
“Whenever you see an accused person not looking at the jurors this can be interpreted to mean some form of guilt”, he remarked.
The convicted Policeman could face a maximum sentence of 15 years on each count of incest, and five years for indecent assault.
Senior defense counsel, Anselm Clouden who is said to be planning an appeal against the two convictions, represented Benjamin.
Evidence for the State was lead by Crown Counsel in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Crisann Greenidge.
The court learnt that the indecent assault occurred in 2009, while the two acts of incest were committed in 2013 and May 2014.
The case which first had started at the previous assizes, took five days during the current September Session of the Assizes to be completed.
