Levels Mas introduces a new era for mas bands

A newly established Carnival band will be making its debut on the road this Carnival season under the theme “Elements of Time.”

IMG_2742“Levels Mas,” featuring seven (7) attractive sections, was introduced to the public during the April 2 official launch of Spicemas 2016 at the Tanteen Playing Field, St. George.

According to Kalifa Purtell, Marketing Director of Levels Mas, “the launch of this new era band has caught the interest of regional, international and local carnival patrons alike.”

In an exclusive interview with THE NEW TODAY last week Friday, Purtell said, the “innovative band backed by a full-fledged promotional team (is) looking forward to having 400 masqueraders on the road.”

She said, “Levels Mas will be a fully all-inclusive band, the first of its kind in Grenada”.

“The Band will introduce a standard of service and amenities found in all-inclusive holiday resorts and will translate this to the local carnival, to create the ultimate Carnival Experience for Spice Mas”, she added.

IMG_2745Purtell stated that the innovative idea for the band stemmed from an unfortunate experience of a bunch of young entrepreneurs living abroad, who came to the island to participate in Carnival 2015 but “had a lot of issues getting costumes” to play mas.

“They had problems with the poor level of customer service from some of the bands and they sat down together and decided that they wanted to do something to change that”, she said.

She added that the majority of persons involved in the band have been “directly and indirectly involved with bands in New York and Miami for the past 15 years.

She stressed the group took a decision last November “to create a concept that would make you feel like you would feel in any of the (mas) bands in Trinidad”.

She expressed the view that “over the last few years tastes have changed, habits have changed, demands have changed, the way we play mas has changed, but for many, mas in Grenada may have changed but it has not truly evolved”.

“Mas will always be about the aesthetic and a pretty costume will always sell, but there is a growing number of people who now crave and yearn not just a costume but also for an experience”, she remarked.

Purtell noted that the launch of the new era band has “piqued the interest of regional, international and local carnival patrons alike”.

She stated proudly that “all of our designers are between the ages of 25 and 35 and are all Grenadian nationals.”
