The Grenada Olympic Committee (GOC) is $50,000 richer for its hosting of CARIFTA 2016 due to a contribution made by Grenada’s sole electricity company, Grenlec.
The cheque was handed over last Thursday by General Manager of Grenlec, Colin Cover to executive member of the Grenada Olympic Committee (GOC), Veda Bruno-Victor at a ceremony held on the tracks of newly constructed National Athletics Stadium.
This is the first significant contribution made by corporate Grenada made to the local Olympic body.
Cover said the company is proud to be associated with CARIFTA games as it is the premier Track and Field event in the region and a time when many athletes will be recognised.
“We are thrilled to be associated with it because it is often the first time our budding athletes see international competition and plus the games are scouted by American schools looking for talent and so our youth get a chance to be educated free in colleges in the United States,” he said.
Cover stated that the coaches and athletes should be given more recognition for the time invested in preparing for the games.
In her remarks, Bruno-Victor also shared the same sentiments of Cover.
“Parents of the athletes also need some mention and the athletics association that has been working tirelessly to ensure that every year we send a team to the CARIFTA games.
Today as it comes to our doorstep, it comes to our backyard, it comes to our front yard, we expect all Grenadians to support us and that is why contributions (are) so important because the association cannot carry it alone, neither can government carry it alone and therefore we need contributions to assist us.
Bruno-Victor pointed out that the organising committee is committed to ensuring that everything is on point for the hosting of CARIFTA.
“We are very happy as we look forward to welcoming just over 800 athletes and officials to our shores, not talking about our supporters we know that it is going to be a bumper time”, she said.
“We want to ensure that we prepare adequately that we receive our guests and therefore today we are very happy and thankful for the contribution of Grenlec and we know that others will follow shortly,” she added.
The CARIFTA games will be held in the newly built athletic stadium that was handed over as a gift to the Government and People of Grenada by the Government and People of China.
