The Diocese of St. George’s-in-Grenada has started making preparations to attend World Youth Day (WYD) 2016 in Krakow, Poland from July 25 to 31, 2016.
Diocesan Youth Coordinator, Sr. Gillian Jerome, SSM, is hoping that parishes will take the opportunity to support their youth, and likewise, the youth and young adults from across the diocese, will engage in fundraising initiatives that will afford them the opportunity to attend the event in Poland.
It is hoped that the Grenadian Pilgrims will explore the possibility of visiting Vatican City and other historical parts of the Catholic world in Rome, and Our Lady of Lourdes Shrine in France.
Sr. Gillian told THE NEW TODAY newspaper that during the stop in London awaiting the onward connections to Poland and back to Grenada, two different parishes have graciously extended hospitality to the Grenadian Pilgrims.
The anticipated cost for the trip is EC$8,000, and will include registration and solidarity fees, airfares, train fares, bed and breakfast, Pilgrim T-shirts and administrative expenses.
A payment plan has been put in place to help ease the financial burden on those who intend to make the pilgrimage.
The first instalment of EC $1,000 to facilitate Grenada’s target for international registration, solidarity fees, and down-payment for accommodation of the Pilgrims in Rome is due for payment by December 15 and can be made at Republic Bank A/c#42009676 – R.C. Bishop of St. George’s – Diocesan Youth Council or at the Youth Secretariat.
Another payment of $1,000 is due by January 31, 2016 and from February 28 running up until May 30, persons are required to make monthly payments of $1,500.
In addition, the first half of the payment on travel tickets are due in by March 31, 2016.
The Pilgrims travel from Grenada to London on July 13 and from London to Poland on July 17.
Missionary Days in the Diocese are from July 18-24, main World Youth Day event of WYD is scheduled for July 25- 31.
The AEC of which Grenada belongs will be hosted in the Diocese of Katowice.
On conclusion, the local contingent will travel by air from Poland to Rome on August 2 and leave Rome by train on August 5 for France for visits to among places Our Lady of Lourdes.
The contingent will leave France by train on August 8 for London, and depart two days later for Grenada on August 1.
According to Sr. Gillian, Spiritual preparation for the event will begin in January 2016 as participants are required to take part in the preparations leading up to the group’s departure.

Fr. Hugh Logan will serve as Spiritual Director on the pilgrimage.
WYD is an international Catholic event focused on religious faith and youth, and is being held in Poland as a tribute to Pope Saint John Paul ll who was canonised on April 27, 2014.
