Businesswoman to become sixth Governor General

Businesswoman, Dr. Cecile La Grenade would be Grenada’s next Governor General.

This was disclosed by Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell in a national address last week Tuesday.

“I am pleased to announce that our next Head of State will be Dr. Cecile La Grenade, a prominent and successful business person, and a prominent and successful Grenadian,” Dr. Mitchell told the nation.

The Prime Minister said his government, which took Office almost two months ago, has put the motion in train with a view to having a new Governor General in place in the very early days of the coming month.

He said government has been in touch with the Office of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth ll.

He spoke of having held discussions with the current Head of State, Sir Carlyle Glean whom he claimed has expressed his desire “to step down at the earliest convenient date.”




Sir Carlyle became the Governor General four years ago after Sir Daniel Williams demitted Office on November 18, 2008.

Dr. La Grenade who once headed the Public Service Commission (PSC) will be the country’s first female Governor General.

She is a close relative of former leftist Prime Minister Maurice Bishop who was executed on Fort George on October 19, 1983 following a bitter leadership squabble in his New Jewel Movement (NJM) with his deputy Bernard Coard and his supporters.

Dr. La Grenade who will become the country’s sixth Governor General since Independence, is the current driving fore behind the family run business known as De La Grenade Industries in St. Paul’s.

Those who served the island as Governors General in the past are Sir Leo De Gale from February 7, 1974 to September 30, 1978, Sir Paul Scoon who held the position from September 30, 1978 to August 6, 1992, Sir Reginald Palmer from August 6, 1992 to August 8, 1996, Sir Daniel Williams who served from August 8, 1996 to November 18, 2008, and Sir Carlyle from November 27, 2008 to present.
