Massive victory for St Mary’s Junior School

The St. Mary’s Junior School (SMJS) has dethroned the Grenada Junior Academy (GJA) in the 2015 Private Primary School’s Championship held last week Thursday at the grounds of the National Stadium, Queen’s Park, St. George. GJA, the six-year champions, suffered a massive defeat when the curtains closed on the 64-event Ribena-sponsored games, amassing a total of 362 points, 134 points less than the athletes of St Mary’s (496 points). Happy Hill Secondary takes Right Start Cup

New Champions have emerged in the 2013 Republic Bank Right Start Football which is in its tenth year. The curtains of the tournament which is opened to Secondary Schools came down last week Wednesday at the Grenada National Stadium with the crowning of new winners in all three categories. In the featured game of the tournament in the senior boys, Happy Hill Secondary School (HHSS) humiliated the Grenada Boys Secondary School (GBSS) three goals to nil. Females dominate Right Start Football

School-aged girls are more and more getting involved in the sport of football. The girls’ involvement in the game which was once primarily dominated by the male sex has caught the attention of many including Managing Director of Republic Bank (Grenada) Limited, Keith Johnson. New Headquarters for GFA

The road is now clear for the Grenada Football Association (GFA) to have its own secretariat. A sod-turning ceremony to mark the commencement of work for the headquarters of the local football body was held last week Thursday and involving President of the Confederation of Caribbean Football Association (CONCACAF), Jeffrey Webb and Youth and Sports Minister, Emmalin Pierre. The headquarters will be built at Queen’s Park, St. George’s on the location of the old saw mill at a cost of $1M. National Team to defend under-19 Cricket Tourney

Grenada will host the Windward Islands Under-19 Cricket Tournament which begins this weekend. The sub-regional cricket tournament runs from July 6 to 14 at the major grounds throughout the country. Thirteen players have already been selected to represent Grenada which is the defending champion. They are Roland Cato (Captain), Keone George (Vice-captain), Melvin Gordon, Omar Charles, Kelton Cadoo, Kishon Mitchell, Kevil Charles (Wicket-keeper), Deron Hypoite, Darel Cyrus, Preston McSween, Sherman Lewis, Craig Phillip, and Javel St. Paul. Grenada has been given the green light to host three international cricket matches at the Grenada National Stadium. The three One-Day International (ODI) Matches between West Indies A and Sri Lanka A takes place on June 23, 25 and 27. Southern Pros Athletic Club Launched

An avenue has been provided for athletes who are no longer within the school system to be grouped in a sports club. Southern Pros Sports Club which would encompass athletes in the St. George’s Parish was officially launched last week at the Grenada National Stadium. Southern Pros Track and Field Club which now has 18 members was conceptualized in September 2010. It is governed by an interim four-member committee.
